Lighting experts, designers and architects today are looking for fixtures that are slim, energy efficient and simple to integrate with low construction costs. Planar lighting meets these needs by delivering large, flat, uniform surfaces of light, which distributes a soft wide angle spread.
LED planar lighting refers to the application of LEDs to create uniform slim surfaces of light. Since LEDs are a point source, creating large surfaces of uniform light has always been cost-prohibitive, and has resulted in a significant loss of efficiency or thickness compromise. However, new advancements in LED technology, materials and processes have allowed us to produce a truly innovative LED-based planar lighting module – the LightCell.
At the heart of planar design is the form factor. Ultra-thin modules are ideal as under cabinet lighting, but take it one step further and you can have an in-cabinet light, so thin that you can embed it into the carpentry or furniture.
Functionality must also be taken in account. Planar lighting generates an extremely wide and soft output suitable for soft flood and display lighting applications, rather than projecting the light in a narrow beam over distance.
Weight must also be considered when designing with planar modules.
Our LightCell module weighs about 8 gr., allowing fixtures to be extremely light with minimal mounting needed.
As opposed to more commonly used point light sources, planar lighting modules illuminate a large surface which can be viewed frontally. In essence, this makes the light-emitting surface part of the fixture design, without using a diffuser and while maintaining only mm of thickness
Oree's White LightCell incorporates several technical features aimed at obtaining as high CRI as possible, in all color temperatures. In fact, any Oree LightCell will generate a CRI and R9 value greater than 90.
CRI or "Color Rendering Index" refers to quality of white light on a scale of 0-100 points. We can also say that a high CRI value of a light source means that it renders colors with high fidelity.
Street lights are probably the most common "low CRI" light source we encounter; everything under the light of the sodium lamps seems to have a yellow/orange color, and as a result is characterized as low CRI. Compare that to your home or office lighting and you can get a sense of the difference.
Another important value is R9 – which is a scale that indicates saturation of the red color. Compared with the CRI scale which is an average of several predetermined colors, the R9 specifically describes the red.
The CRI value helps up define how natural objects, people, and scenes look under the light source. In the past the vast majority of light sources were incandescent in nature, so this issue was not as important – simply due to the fact that an incandescent light bulb has a CRI value of 100 (the Max possible).
Over time other illumination technologies have become available; more efficient and longer lasting fluorescent and LED lights are replacing the standard incandescent technology, and though in some aspects show great improvement, none has been able to match the CRI value of the humble Edison bulb.
The R9 scale since describes the red color only, is mostly used for describing quality of warm light (which has red in it) on natural human skin tones
Oree offers several different color temperatures to suit different design purposes; 2700K, 3000K, and 4000K.
The CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) scale is a simplified way of characterizing some properties of the white light. It characterizes the color of the emitted light, not the color of illuminated objects.
We know that white light is composed of many different wavelengths (different colors) and the color of light is determined by how much each point on the spectral curve contributes to its output. This is represented in a linear scale - CCT which is measured in Kelvin degrees.
We often refer to colors as being cool and warm. Most of us will perceive blue color as cool and red/orange as warm.
As a general notion, we can say that warmer light gives a more intimate feel, and flatters the human skin (due to the red in it), so we would most likely use it indoors for the living room or bedroom, for example. Cool light, conversely, is bright and refreshing, and will most likely be used in kitchens, as task lighting, or general lighting.
LEDs are inherently different than incandescent or discharge light sources. A quantum attribute of the electron is utilized to convert electricity (almost) entirely into visible light. Making the LED an extremely efficient and environmental light source for several reasons:
· Efficiency – as the conversion rate of electricity to light output is very high, the LED portraits unrivaled light output/power consumption ratio (i.e. efficiency).
A standard 100W incandescent bulb has a typical efficiency rate of 5%, which means only 5% of the power consumption is transformed into visible light. The rest is output as heat or other types of radiation.
The (typical) LED has about 95% efficiency with only a little loss as heat.
· Heat / UV Radiation – the LED generates a particular and narrow wave length. As a result, the LED does not radiate any heat (infra red) or UV light (ultra violet), making it completely safe for long exposure.
Hazardous Materials – as heavy metals are frequently used in light bulbs, exposure or even disposing of them requires special attention due to the toxicity. The LED chip is a piece of silicone and does not contain any hazardous materials
With the physical size of the light source, new design possibilities are made available. Perhaps the most noticeable is the reduction of size of a lighting application which directly translates to using less material for construction, and significantly less volume is required for storage and shipping.
Though several different parameters exist for measuring efficacy, the most common one used by lighting professionals is Lumen/Watt.
Lumen describes the total amount of light radiated from a source, while Watt is a measure of power consumption. Divide one by the other and you can measure the lumen efficacy.
Flattening a point light source is a wasteful procedure. By diffusing it or breaking the light, output is always lost.
Oree's patented LED encapsulation techniques are designed to decrease loss of output, and a few more are used to increase the amount of light received. As a result, the LightCell performs at a very high efficacy rate and has proved to be one of the most efficient solutions available

Future Lighting Solutions and Oree, Sign Worldwide Distribution Agreement - Link
Can you change the CCT?
No, the LightCell operates at its designated color temperature Custom CCT can be accommodated if large quantities are ordered.
What will happen if you remove the phosphor layer?
The phosphor layer is a part of the optical design. Removing it will make the LightCell produce purple light, rather than white.
Can the LightCell have a different "off state" color?
The yellow color is the phosphor itself and cannot be changed.
Why does the color change depending on viewing angle?
The LightCell uses different wavelengths of light for creating the high CRI output. As each color distributes differently hue variations can appear depending on viewing angle
Are all cells exactly the same color?
All LightCell produced are tested to meet ANSI specifications. variations of up to 4 Mcadam ellipses are allowed.
What is the lumen maintenance over time?
The LightCell meets L70; under used conditions the LightCell will suffer less than 30% degradation in total output over 50,000 hours
How uniform is the light distribution?
The uniformity is measured as Umin/Umax where Umax (Umin) are the maximum (minimum) values measured across the LightCell.
The obtained 70% uniformity is considered a high level of uniformity
What is Photometry?
Photometric information on a light bulb/LED/fixture represents the output and angle of the illuminating object. This helps engineers and designers to calculate lighting levels and results of using the object.
What is the LightCell CRI?
CRI is a measure to the quality of the colors produced by the illuminated object while illuminated with the LightCell; >90 is considered a high quality
What will happen if we stick the phosphor to the light guide?
It is not recommended to stick the phosphor layer to the light guide, a hot spot will appear at the sticking point.
What will happen if I turn on only one channel?
Operating only one channel will result is a different CCT than the specifications and a much lower CRI (quality)
Why use 2 channels and not only white LEDs?
White LED planar lighting has proven to be LESS efficient than the LightCell design; there is a difference in reliability and other technical specs as well
Can you get LightCells in different sizes and shapes?
The LightCell has various configurations of shapes and sizes which are predetermined. Specifying custom dimensions is only possible in high volume orders
Can you cut parts of the Light Guide to make it smaller?
Cutting parts of the light guide will disrupt the light distribution which will not result in uniform and even light spread
